Most candidates ask “what percentage do I need?” The harder question is whether your weakest skill still clears 60%. CCE A2 is designed so you cannot hide a zero-effort oral behind a polished reading paper.

The 60% / 60% rule in plain English

Treat the exam as four gates plus a total. You must pass each gate and the total. If Speaking lands at 55% while everything else sits at 80%, you fail the sitting even though the average looks fine.

Vocabulary alone does not fix a subtest failure. Reading needs scanning speed. Listening needs number and intent capture. Writing needs complete answers to every prompt bullet. Speaking needs short connected turns under the 2026 individual MS Teams format from the exam centre.

On results day, download your scores before you celebrate. Check each subtest percentage against 60%. If one skill sits just under, your next sitting should protect that skill first, then maintain the others so they do not slip.

Employers and faculties that ask for “CCE A2” usually mean the certificate, not an informal teacher letter. Confirm the exact level on the job or programme page. Some routes ask for B1 even when daily life feels manageable at A2.

Why aim above 60% in practice

Exam day adds noise: fatigue after three written blocks, a late oral slot, a number you mishear once. If your last timed practice sits at exactly 60% in Listening, you have no buffer. Train toward 65–70% on each skill in practice so a small drop still clears ÚJOP’s published floor. That margin is especially important for Speaking under the 2026 individual MS Teams format, where nerves and wait time can flatten answers you produced cleanly at home.

Build a four-column score sheet after every mixed practice: Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking, plus a simple overall average. Colour any cell under 60% red and any cell between 60% and 65% amber. Red skills get primary weekly hours. Amber skills get short maintenance so they do not slip while you repair red. This is more honest than a single “I feel ready” judgement after a good Reading day.

What counts as evidence before you book

ÚJOP’s self-assessment guidance exists so candidates pick A1–C1 honestly. Combine it with one timed model paper and one recorded speaking answer reviewed against the candidate manual.
